Breaking: Inquiry Finds Enforced Disappearances Politically Driven, BNP Most Affected
The Commission of Inquiry on Enforced Disappearances has submitted its final report to Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, stating that enforced disappearances during the previous Awami League government were largely political in nature.T
The report says 1,913 complaints were filed, with 1,569 confirmed as enforced disappearances. Of those who later returned alive, 75 percent were linked to Jamaat-e-Islami and Islami Chhatra Shibir. Among those still missing, 68 percent were leaders or activists of the Bangladesh Nationalist Party.
Commission member Nabila Idris warned the actual number of victims could range between 4,000 and 6,000, citing fear, lack of awareness, and migration as key reasons for underreporting.
The inquiry found evidence pointing to direct involvement of former prime minister Sheikh Hasina, along with senior security and government officials, in several high-profile cases.
Investigators also documented illegal cross-border handovers of detainees and identified multiple sites used for extrajudicial killings and body disposal.
Chief Adviser Yunus called the findings historic and said they expose grave abuses that demand accountability.
