Trump Issues Warning to Venezuela’s New Leader as Maduro Prepares for US Court Appearance
US president Donald Trump has warned Venezuela’s new leader, Delcy Rodríguez, that she could face serious consequences if she does not cooperate with the United States, according to an interview published by The Atlantic.
Trump’s comments come as Venezuela’s former president Nicolás Maduro is scheduled to appear in a New York court on Monday. US authorities have charged Maduro with drug trafficking and weapons-related offenses, allegations he has repeatedly denied.
The remarks follow US military action in Caracas over the weekend that resulted in Maduro and his wife being taken into custody and transferred to the United States. US Secretary of State Marco Rubio said the United States is not at war with Venezuela, while some Democratic lawmakers criticized the operation, describing it as an escalation that could have broader consequences.
In the interview, Trump said any change in Venezuela’s leadership would be preferable to the current situation and reiterated his view that the country requires a transitional period. He also said US energy companies could play a role in rebuilding Venezuela’s oil infrastructure.
Despite the developments, Maduro’s political allies remain in control of key institutions inside Venezuela.
Meanwhile, Cuba, a long-time ally of Maduro, said several Cuban nationals were killed during the US operation and announced a period of national mourning.
